Although it is basic science, many people don’t have clue about
what causes vitamin D deficiency. If you are in the same boat, learn a
thing or two about vitamin D by reading this article.
Vitamin D is found on sunshine as well as on certain foods such as
fish, beef, milk, cheese, and eggs. And so it goes without saying that
ignoring these vitamin D sources is what causes vitamin D
deficiency.
The main task of vitamin D is to manage the chemical processes of
phosphorus and calcium in the human body. This is crucial to the
construction and maintenance of the skeletal system. Vitamin D is
primary responsible for the development of strong, nimble bones. It is
perplexing to think about how many people still suffer from vitamin D
deficiencies despite the ease with which you can obtain this
vitamin.
According to research published by National Institutes of Health,
there are many diseases closely linked to lack of vitamin D. Among
these are throat and mouth pain, mild depression, mood swings,
nervousness, constipation, diarrhea, and other digestive
malfunction. Some people are known to have developed serious illnesses
such as cancer, hypertension and diabetes because of not enough
vitamin D running through their system.
The most common symptom of vitamin D deficiency is bone
deformities. Because of its important function in maintaining bone
structure and development, not consuming enough vitamin D can lead to
rickets and other serious bone issues. Children who do not get ample
supply of this important substance tend to grow with hunched backs and
fragile bones.
Milk is the richest source of vitamin D among foods. Fish and its
liver oil are also said to contain significant amounts of vitamin
D. If you rarely consume fish and milk in your diet, you are seriously
missing out on this very important vitamin. Other rich sources of this
element are eggs and beef liver. You can also take vitamin D pills and
supplements to augment what little vitamin D you are getting from your
diet.
The sun is by far the cheapest source of vitamin D. All it takes is
spending as little as 10 to 15 minutes of sunshine every morning. If
you are always in a hurry to get to work, you can at least walk all
way to your office if it’s not really that far. Or you can park your
car a little farther away from the building so you can walk and bask
in the sun from the parking lot to your office.
